Nancy Hirst

Artistic Director

With a passion for arts and social change, Nancy Hirst trained at the National Theatre Studio and set up Icon Theatre in 2002 while working as a freelance theatre and opera director, to develop accessible participatory and community theatre projects which she felt were often overlooked or seen as an ‘add-on’ by other more established companies. She has worked at the Opera North and the Yvonne Arnaud, BAC, Soho, Arcola and Young Vic Theatres, as well as being a trustee of Medway Voluntary Action for seven years.  Best career moments include winning a Fringe First, decorating the bin lorries of Dartford with young people’s artwork and directing a show about 23 submarines in the Medway River.
