James Dawes - Participant in 'Six Ways' Project
I took part in the ‘Six Ways to Wellbeing’ project 2 years ago. At the time I’d just dropped out of school – I have ADHD so I find it hard to concentrate for long periods. I was a bit depressed because all my friends were still going to school and I didn’t have a lot going on. I worked with the Icon Theatre technician and we did the sound design together, and then I operated all the cues through the show. I got my Bronze Arts Award and I really got my confidence back. Two weeks afterwards, I got an interview for a job in a warehouse – and I got it! I don’t think I would have gone for the interview, and I definitely wouldn’t have got the job, if I hadn’t done the Six Ways project first.
Sarah Jones, Move & Make participant
I attended Move & Make sessions for about 6 months when I was just coming out of quite a serious depression. After a bit I got to know the teachers and people at Icon, and I started volunteering with them as an assistant for their Youth Theatre sessions. Things grew from there and eventually I started working for them as a part time administrative assistant in their office. It was exactly what I needed at the time to get me back on my feet and it helped me enormously. Now I’m full time at another company. I don’t think I would have got where I am today without the support of Icon.
