Icon’s Assistant Director Placement is a paid professional development opportunity for emerging theatre directors, offering training in community, participatory and co-created theatre.

This placement gives early-career directors and theatre-makers access to collaborative rehearsal and production processes, offering hands-on practical insight into Icon’s work.

Placements vary dependent on the production, but commonly you will support the director during rehearsals, collaborate with creatives and the company, and work communities and young people to develop scenes.

We work closely with our Assistant Directors throughout the placement and beyond.

How To Take Part

This opportunity is for directors and theatre-makers usually aged 21+. Icon runs an Assistant Director Placement on each of its productions (1 or 2 per year). What is Icon’s Incubator programme?

Icon’s Incubator programme provides work experience, careers advice and mentoring, backstage and technical training, and an Assistant Director Placement programme, nurturing the next generation of set, lighting and sound designers, directors, producers, administrators, technicians and backstage crew.
