Want to find out what it’s really like to work behind the scenes in theatre? Icon’s Incubator programme gives you the chance to explore backstage and technical careers, build new skills, and step into paid work experience or even your first professional role as an Assistant.
Incubator supports young people to become the stage managers, directors, lighting designers, sound engineers, set builders, costume makers .. (and the many other backstage and technical roles) of tomorrow.
Here’s what’s on offer:

Specialist workshops – lighting, sound, stage management, video design, VR/AR, and sustainable stagecraft, with ongoing mentoring from Icon’s professional team.

Industry trips – visit major theatres such as The Gulbenkian and Theatre Royal Stratford East, gaining first-hand exposure to backstage and technical theatre, and watch professional productions at scale.
Ongoing mentoring is provided by the Icon Theatre team, who will support you to follow your own interests, signpost routes into further and higher education, and guide you in applying for industry roles.
Where it can lead:

Paid work experience placements (usually 1 week) – join Icon’s professional productions as a Backstage Team Member, working alongside experienced industry professionals.

Assistant placements – take on real responsibility within professional creative and production teams, gaining experience across a full production cycle (e.g. Assistant Producer, Assistant Technician).
